I make chairs, mostly. Everything is joined rather than screwed, in local hardwood I buy from two mills within an hour of the workshop. I post the failures as well as the finished pieces — there is more to learn in a split tenon than in a nice photograph.

The third attempt at the curved back rest, and why the first two failed

Steam bending chengal is a bad idea and I have now proved it twice. Laminating six 3mm strips around a form worked first time and holds the curve after a fortnight off the jig. Photos of both failures below, including the one that split along the whole length.

Finished: dining set of six, commissioned in March

Five months, mostly waiting for timber to settle. The client wanted them to look used from day one, so the tops were finished with oil rather than lacquer and will mark. Told them so in writing first, which I would recommend to anyone taking commissions.
